The Avanti was designed to the ideas and specifications of her current owner. The underwater hull is based on the construction drawings of three tugboats built between 1920 and 1950. Above the waterline, the design was inspired by the harbour tugs built by Barkmeier Shipyard in Stroobos around 1985 for Smit Tak in Rotterdam. Gaastmeer Design subsequently developed the design into detailed construction drawings and a complete cutting package. The hull of the Avanti was built in 2006 by Heijsman Shipyard in Stavoren, construction number 36. She was originally powered by a MAK MV 36, a 4-cylinder slow-running diesel engine producing 160 hp at 500 rpm. This engine came from a German inland vessel and was completely overhauled by the owner at Bolier’s workshop in Dordrecht. Reintjes supplied the matching reverse gearbox. Thanks to the efficient design of her underwater hull, the Avanti is particularly economical. Propulsion is provided by a 4-bladed Lips propeller with a diameter of 1,050 mm, installed in an HR nozzle. The propeller shaft installation was supplied by IHC Lagersmit and fitted with a Suprime seal. As part of the CVO certification requirements, the MAK engine was replaced in 2018 by a MAN 2866 LXE40, a 6-cylinder diesel engine producing 360 hp at 1,800 rpm. The engine complies with Tier 2 emissions standards. A ZF W320 reverse gearbox was installed, with a reduction ratio of 4.5:1 and trolling function. The electrical installation was supplied by Piet Brouwer from Urk. The navigation equipment was supplied and commissioned by Radio Holland Delfzijl. Most of the interior joinery was carried out by Jurjen Mulder from Grou. Following the construction of the Avanti, Heijsman Shipyard built the Poolster, now named Robbedoes. This vessel is longer, wider and deeper and has a slightly different underwater hull design, partly because the engine is positioned further aft. Over the years, the Avanti has undertaken many voyages, both on the IJsselmeer and at sea. She has also proven herself in challenging conditions, up to Beaufort force 9. The Avanti sits lightly on the water, handles comfortably and, thanks to her excellent hull design, takes remarkably little water over the bow. A characterful and carefully built tug with an impressive cruising history. The Avanti is currently available for viewing by appointment in Friesland. For any questions or to arrange a viewing, the Elburg Yachting team is available 7 days a week.
